Frequently Asked Questions
About URL to PDF
This tool loads a live webpage with wkhtmltopdf, a headless WebKit-based renderer, and captures it as a PDF. wkhtmltopdf can execute JavaScript and render real CSS layouts, which puts it well ahead of a pure HTML-to-PDF library — but it's also a long-unmaintained project built on an old WebKit engine, so it does not render modern JavaScript-heavy single-page applications (React, Vue, and similar frameworks) reliably the way a current browser would. Simple to moderately dynamic pages generally work well; complex modern web apps often don't.
If wkhtmltopdf fails or isn't available on the server, the tool falls back to fetching the page's raw HTML and rendering it with mPDF instead — and mPDF does not execute JavaScript at all, so that fallback only really works for simple, mostly-static pages. Only publicly accessible pages can be converted either way; anything behind a login, session cookie, or CAPTCHA can't be captured. The full scrollable height of the page is captured as a multi-page PDF.
Key Features
- Primary rendering via wkhtmltopdf, a headless WebKit-based engine that runs JavaScript and CSS
- Works well on simple-to-moderate pages; modern JS-framework-heavy sites may not render accurately
- Automatic fallback to a static HTML+mPDF path (no JavaScript) if wkhtmltopdf is unavailable
- Only publicly accessible URLs can be captured — login-gated and session-based pages cannot
- Entire page height captured as a multi-page PDF — no cropping
Tips for Best Results
- 1 If a modern, JavaScript-heavy site renders blank or broken, that's a real limitation of the underlying renderer on complex single-page apps — try capturing a simpler, more static page instead where possible.
- 2 If the tool captures a login page instead of the content, the page requires authentication — only use URLs accessible without logging in.
- 3 Use URL to PDF to preserve important web-based references, as a permanent offline backup against link rot.
