Frequently Asked Questions

You can place page numbers in any of 6 positions: top-left, top-center, top-right, bottom-left, bottom-center, or bottom-right. The live preview on the page thumbnails shows exactly where each number will appear.
Yes. Use the "Start number" option to begin counting from any number you choose — for example, start at 5 if this PDF continues from a previous document.
Yes. Use the "From page" option to start numbering from page 2 onward, leaving your cover page without a number.
Yes. Switch the Text option from the default plain number to "Page {n} of {total}" (e.g. "Page 1 of 9"), or to a centered em-dash style, in the options panel.
No. Page numbers are added as a new layer on top of the existing content. The original text, images, and layout of each page remain completely unchanged.

About Page Numbering

Beyond just picking a position, you get to choose how the number itself reads: a plain number (the default), "Page 1 of 9" style with the total page count included, or a centered em-dash style like "— 1 —" often used in formal print layouts. Font family (Arial, Times, or Courier), size, bold, italic, underline, and color are all adjustable from a compact toolbar, so the numbering can match the rest of your document instead of looking like an obviously bolted-on stamp.

You can also set the starting number (useful when this file is one chapter of a larger, already-paginated document), restrict numbering to a From/To page range to skip a cover page or exclude an appendix, and choose a margin preset — narrow, recommended, or wide — that controls how far the number sits from the page edge. Numbers are added as a new layer on top of the existing content; nothing about the original pages is modified.

Key Features

  • Six placement positions: top / bottom × left / center / right
  • Three number styles: plain number, "Page X of Y", or centered em-dash
  • Font family, size, bold, italic, underline, and color all customizable
  • Configurable starting number and a From/To page range to skip cover pages or appendices
  • Three margin presets — narrow, recommended, wide — controlling distance from the page edge

Tips for Best Results

  • 1 For reports with a cover page, set "From page" to 2 so the cover has no visible page number.
  • 2 For chapter 3 of a multi-chapter document starting at page 37, set "Start number" to 37.
  • 3 Use the "Page X of Y" style for formal reports and legal documents — readers can immediately see how far through the document they are.
  • 4 Bottom-center is the most widely expected page number position for formal business and legal documents.
