About Repair PDF
This tool feeds your PDF through Ghostscript's PDF interpreter and asks it to re-write a fresh, standards-compliant file. Ghostscript's parser is deliberately forgiving — it's built to make sense of PDFs that don't strictly follow the spec — so re-interpreting and re-saving a file this way often recovers documents that other viewers reject outright with a "file is damaged" error. This covers the most common real-world corruption patterns: incomplete downloads, broken cross-reference tables from a save that got interrupted, and similar structural damage.
How much comes back depends entirely on how much of the original file is actually intact. Truncated downloads and broken internal tables are the cases this reliably fixes. Files with large sections physically overwritten or genuinely destroyed data can't be recovered — there's no missing data to reconstruct from thin air, only what Ghostscript can still parse.

Tips for Best Results
- 1 If the file is completely unreadable (0 bytes, or binary gibberish with no PDF structure), repair is not possible — the underlying data may be physically gone.
- 2 Before uploading, rename the file to remove special characters or non-ASCII letters — some systems mishandle these and produce corrupt outputs in the first place.
- 3 After successful repair, use Compress PDF to clean up the internal structure further — Ghostscript's repair pass can leave some redundant objects behind.
